Summer Solstice Fairy Music

This painting started with a simple portal created from the tree roots and a hollowed-out room of a big oak tree. I loved the composition so much that I didn't want to work in to it - so I sat with it for a while until a story emerged...

For some time I have wanted to develop the idea of the lone musician that I depicted in 'The Fairy Tree'. I explored how fairies would celebrate the solstice with their friends and express their love of music and movement. I wanted to incorporate other small creatures from the forest in the painting and I felt that it was the natural choice to have a grasshopper conductor holding the rhythm and setting the frequency of the music. The instruments played are all acoustic and made from materials found in the forest.

I am not certain how this story will end or develop yet, but I am quite sure that on this day and into the night, much fun and frivolity was had.
